The Barsad Paper Prize Fund is an annual endowed fund that started in 2023 to honor the distinguished work of Dr. Sigal G. Barsade. As the Joseph Frank Bernstein Professor of Management at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Barsade was an award-winning teacher and scholar whose research focused on “everything that can’t be explained by rationality.” She was a trailblazer in the study of emotions and emotional intelligence at work and organizational culture, as well as unconscious bias, leadership, and organizational change. Dr. Barsade received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California – Los Angeles and her Ph.D. in organizational behavior from the University of California – Berkeley’s Haas School of Management. She taught at the Wharton School from 2003 until her passing in 2022.

- a published paper that makes a strong theoretical contribution that advances knowledge about emotions in the workplace;
- research using rigorous empirical evidence from field data;
- offering broad insights into organizational behavior;
- the award winner must be present either in person or by zoom at the Wharton Organizational Behavior Conference.

Committee
The Prize Fund is administered by the Management Department at the Wharton School and is selected by a group of faculty.

Prize Announcement
The award is announced annually at the Wharton Organizational Behavior Conference each November and presented at the conclusion of the Conference.
The award winner must be present either in person or by zoom at the Wharton Organizational Behavior Conference.
Prize Details
For the prize-winning paper, the winner will receive a $1,000 unrestricted cash award.

2024 Winner
The winner of the 2024 Dr. Sigal Barsade Paper Prize is Professor Jakob Strollberger. Jakob is a Professor of Leadership and Organizational Behavior at Durham University Business School in Durham, England.
Professor Strollberger’s submission was entitled, Inspiring yet Tiring: How Leader Emotional Complexity Shapes Follower Creativity.
